
This Content Area Literacy Guide, one component of CCSSO’s Adolescent Literacy Toolkit, explains the importance of content literacy and provides examples of instructional strategies and best practices that support all students as they progress from the learning-to-read focus of elementary school to the reading-to-learn focus of high school core content classes. It also includes a framework for effective lesson planning and a template to assist with planning content area lessons that incorporate before, during, and after reading.
