This synthesis of research provides evidence of the positive impact repeated book reading has on the language and literacy development of young children. The findings from sixteen studies indicate that multiple readings of storybooks to young children increase oral vocabulary and story comprehension skills. Rereading a story at least four times over the course of several days provides sufficient exposure to the text vocabulary and story theme to increase children’s word knowledge and story comprehension.
