In this American Educator’s Summer 2008 article, a noted cognitive scientist explores the term “developmentally appropriate practice” (DAP) and discusses the importance of understanding learning variability when planning instruction. This term is used extensively in early childhood education.  Many early childhood teachers and leaders, however, do not have a deep understanding of the term.  As a result, instructional practices that are not scientifically based or beneficial to young children are used or promoted as “developmentally appropriate.”  To read the article, click here.
